We Are Thrilled to Announce the Official Launch of the Share the Road Club Designation Program!

There’s a moment every June — when the mornings feel lighter and you can sense the whole province waking up to the joy of riding. Bike Month isn’t just a celebration of cycling. It’s a celebration of the people who ride – neighbours, parents, commuters, weekend adventurers, and community builders in every corner of Ontario.

Ontario Bike Month is a great time to celebrate a landmark moment for our province’s cycling community.

Reclaiming the Narrative: Who We Really Are

For years, cyclists have too often been misunderstood or painted as something separate from the communities we belong to. The Share the Road Club Designation proudly reframes that story and is an opportunity to reclaim the narrative.

We are putting a human face on who we are as people who ride our bikes for fun, for fitness, for connection, and for the mental and physical well‑being that movement brings. Since polling confirms that 87% of Ontarians are motorists and cyclists, we know that keeping our roads safe for everyone involves all of us. Because safe mobility is a shared priority, and whether behind the wheel or in the saddle we all want safer roads for everyone – and we all want to get home safely.

Today, we’re proud to launch a program that reflects that. A program built with clubs, for clubs. A program that says clearly and confidently: we share the road, we look out for one another, and we are building a culture of safety and respect across Ontario.

We are committed to sharing the road, driving with care and attention, and looking out for ourselves and each other. As designated clubs, we are proud to live and promote these values.

Ontario Cycling and the Share the Road Cycling Coalition are proud to announce the launch of the Share the Road Club Designation Program, a province‑wide initiative designed to strengthen safety culture, empower clubs as community advocates, and help raise awareness of our shared sense of purpose that Ontario’s roads need to be safe for everyone, and especially for our most vulnerable road users – cyclists.

This program has been built with clubs and for clubs, shaped by direct feedback from riders and leaders across the province. And now, it’s ready to ride.

What Is the Share the Road Club Designation?

The Share the Road Club Designation is a voluntary, structured program open to Ontario Cycling–affiliated clubs. It provides practical tools, education resources, and advocacy support to help clubs lead by example on the road and in their communities.

Designated clubs commit to:

  • Promoting responsible, safe riding as a core part of club culture
  • Embedding safety education into rides, communications, and leadership
  • Raising awareness by sharing the designation on websites and social channels
  • Engaging constructively in their communities to support safer roads
  • Participating in a Share the Road Ride initiative — either the annual Gran Fondo or a locally designated club ride
  • Reinforcing respect for all road users because 87% of Ontario cyclists are also drivers. This isn’t “us vs. them.” It’s all of us.

Designated clubs may proudly display the Share the Road Club Designation badge on their website, kits, and communications.

Meet Our Founding Designated Clubs

We are incredibly proud to recognize the clubs who have stepped up to lead the way as part of our inaugural cohort. These clubs embody what this program is all about: commitment, community, and a passion for making cycling better for everyone.

Thank you to each of these clubs for your enthusiasm, leadership, and belief in what we are building together. You are setting the standard for the entire province, and your feedback will help us make this program as accessible and successful as possible.

What Does the Designation Involve?

The program is structured but flexible — designed to work within your club’s existing leadership without requiring new volunteer roles.

Each season, designated clubs complete a set of core actions, including:

  • Safety education for members and ride leaders
  • At least one community engagement activity
  • Participation in a Share the Road Ride initiative like the Share the Road Gran Fondon on September 20th

Clubs receive a full suite of supports, including:

  • Advocacy presentations tailored to your club
  • Ready‑to‑use toolkits, templates, and talking points
  • Safety education resources
  • Event materials and signage
  • Ongoing updates and program resources
