Team Ontario – BMX Nationals Application and Rising Stars Camps Announced

Rising Stars BMX Camps 

Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Track 

Overview  

Rising Stars camps are designed to provide aspiring athletes with opportunities to develop the key skills and knowledge required for competing and exceling in BMX Racing. This program may also serve as a talent identification means for upcoming years. The camps are led by experienced BMX Coaches and assisted by current/former Team Ontario athletes.

Athlete Requirements  

  • Must be aged 12-15 in 2024 [age 15 may be considered – requires approval from Provincial Coach]
  • Must hold a UCI, Compete, or Challenge Membership issued by Ontario Cycling 
  • Must have previous racing experience (this is not a learn to ride camp) 
 

Objectives  

  • To develop core BMX racing skills with specific emphasis on proper gate form, jumping, manualing, and cornering 
  • To introduce riders to off-bike skills including education on proper fueling for training and race days and basic strength and mobility training 
  • To establish a regular training group to build athlete to athlete support, foster healthy competition, and help to transition athletes into Ontario Performance Programming in the next 1-3 years
 

Camp Schedule  

June 1:  11:30am – 2:10pm  

  • Focused on gates and corners (where to take them, how to take them, how to pass)
  • Last 40 minutes will be a sport science workshop with Strength and Conditioning Coach and Nutritionist Kevin Iwasa-Madge
 

July 27: 11:30am – 2:10pm  

  • Focused on jumping second straight and manualing third straight 
  • Last 40 minutes will be a sport science workshop with Strength and Conditioning Coach and Nutritionist Kevin Iwasa-Madge
 

August 17: 11:30am – 2:10pm  

  • Continuation of jumping and manualing 
  • Last 40 minutes will be a sport science workshop with Strength and Conditioning Coach and Nutritionist Kevin Iwasa-Madge
 

Cost 

$40/Camp (if registered individually)  

$100 Total (if registered for all 3)

Team Ontario Applications & Selection Criteria for Canadian BMX Championships

Ontario will be selecting athletes to represent Team Ontario at the Canadian BMX Championships and Canada Cup#1 in Vaudreuil-Soulanges, QC July 6-7.  The team will be led by Provincial BMX Development Coach Britney Hovencamp and supported by assistant coach(es).  Athletes will be required to arrange for their own travel and accommodations.  

Team Composition

2 Male & 2 Female in the 15X category

2 Male & 2 Female in the 16X category

3 Male & 3 Female in the Junior category (Up to 1 additional athlete if all 3 selections are filled by automatic criteria)  

U23/Elite  – All athletes meeting the Automatic Selection Criteria

Application

All athletes interested in representing Team Ontario must complete the following APPLICATION

All athletes are expected to attend the trials – those not meeting the automatic selection are required to attend the trials.  Any exceptions must be brought for to the Britney Hovencamp who may make recommendation for consideration to the HP Committee as part of “Coach Recommendation” criteria outlined below.

June 29 & 30 – Team Ontario Nationals Prep. Opportunity (not required) 9:00am -12:00pm [Pan Am Track Etobicoke]

July 2 & 3 – On-site Training Vaudreuil-Soulanges, QC

July 4 – Rest/Recovery/Team Meeting  Vaudreuil-Soulanges, QC

July 5 – Official Canadian Championship Training

July  6 – 7 – Canadian BMX Championships & Canada Cup#1

Athlete Requirements for Eligibility

  1. Must hold a 2024 UCI License issued by Ontario
  2. Must demonstrate the following skills [either through attendance at Rising Stars Camp or Assessment Camp]:
    1. Jump Pan Am 2nd amateur straight
    2. Manual Pan Am 3rd amateur straight
  1. Must meet following 1 lap time standards [consideration may be given towards weather/track conditions at the discretion of the provincial coach and approval of HP Committee)
 

Girls 15 – 50.5

Boys 15 – 46.5s

Girls 16 -49s

Boys 16 – 45s

Girls Junior – 48s

Boys Junior – 44s  

Selection Criteria (in priority order)

  1. Selected for a CC project in 2023 or 2024 [automatic selection] Junior/U23/Elite
  2. OHPSI [Performance Pool] identified athlete [automatic selection]*

*Athletes in U23/Elite must have met items 1 or 2 above to be eligible for selection

Additional Athletes

  • Athlete Trial/Assessment [June 15th ]
  • Top Men/Women fastest lap times in 15X & 16X [to max 2 athletes in each category
  • Top Men/Women fastest lap times Junior [to max 3 athletes in each category or 1+ automatic selection criteria]
  • Additional athletes from coach recommendation and discretion of HP Committee based on:
    • Performance results from 2023 Canada Cups and National Championship demonstrate competitiveness w/ selected athletes
