OVERVIEW
Ontario Cycling, with support from the Coaching Association of Ontario and the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, are hosting the Ontario Cycling Coach Conference at the Sherwood Community Centre in Milton on November 30th-December 1st. The conference is open to OC members and non-OC members that focus on Intro to Competition, Competition Development and High-Performance levels.

Saturday November 30th:
“Creating a Learning Environment to Enhance Performance” Session with Glenn Cundari
Description:
- What is learning? Why it matters in performance.
- The coach’s role in supporting learning – aka, coaching
- Difference between pedagogy (child learning) and andragogy (adult learning)
- Just-in-time learning vs. just-in-case learning
- Everyday thing coaches do that fly under the “learning radar”
- Debriefing
- Use of questions and statements/feedback
- Checking for understanding
- How does all of this lead to better performance? Just skill acquisition? Or other factors?
- Constraint-based coaching and why it matters for performance
“Communicating With a New Generation of Athlete” Session with Dr. Judy Goss
Description:
- How to engage athletes, maintain their attention, and provide support while continuing to challenge them
- How can you develop athletes who are motivated, autonomous and resilient
- How to improve your delivery as a coach to account for individual differences
- Use strategies provided to change your approach to meet the individual needs on an athlete
“Conditioning: It’s More Than Just Cardio” Session with Kevin Iwasa-Madge
Description:
- Review energy systems as they relate to athlete conditioning
- Explore the fundamental types of conditioning work that can be done
- Provide monitoring and prescriptive parameters to differentiate between different types of conditioning
“Fueling Athletes: The Power of Nutrition” with Nicole Springle
Description:
- Identify when an athlete’s nutrition is impacting their performance
- Identifies the tools available to help them through it
- Better understanding of the nutrition needs of cyclists
- Provides the knowledge of how to support your athletes
Sunday December 1st:
“Introducing Nutritional Physiology into your Training Zones” with Kevin Iwasa-Madge
Description:
- Review common training zone models and the fundamentals of fueling
- Translate general principles into sport specific context
- Identify high-risk nutrition zones
- Explore strategies to individualize your approach
“Competing and Training in the Heat: How to Prepare When Things Get Hot” with Josh Good
Description:
- Explore why the heat affects our ability to perform in events of anything longer than a few minutes
- Discuss how to combat the effects of heat
- Strategies on race day and in the weeks and months leading up to competition will be discussed
“Sharing Best Practices: Planning & Execution” with Jenny Trew
Description:
- Crafting the optimal learning experience for athletes
- Discussing practical administrative/logistical/coaching pieces when trying to put together a successful project
- Sharing practical and useful tips to get the most out of athletes, keep people safe, create opportunities for growth, etc.
