OC Women’s Spotlight – Emilie Kelso

How long have you been in cycling?

I have been cycling since 2017.

How did you get into cycling?

I needed a way to get around the city without a car and loved the freedom and exhilaration I got from it – I was instantly hooked!

What is your favourite discipline?

Toss up between road and fixed gear!

Who is your favourite cyclist?

AJ – duh! She’s so much fun. Also all of my co-competitors – this sport wouldn’t be what it is without them!

What has been your favourite event in 2025?

I loved the Kingston stage race – the location was central and beautiful, and it was refreshing to have flatter courses well suited to sprinters! The highlight for me was having a separate road race for the B women where I was able to remain competitive, learn a lot and push myself to try new things! This weekend has me super motivated to race provincials.

What is something you want to see in the future of cycling?

Greater opportunities for new female racers – this looks like having not only separate categories, but separate races for the A and B (and maybe even C) women! When I started racing, the idea of lining up with pro women prevented me from registering, and hindered my growth in the sport. Having a distinct race for lower classifications makes an enormous difference in the accessibility of racing.
