OC Women’s Month Profile – Shelley Gautier

Shelley Gautier is one of our outstanding Canadian Paralympic Athletes. She was named a flag bearer at the 2023 Parapan Am Games, leading her Canadian teammates into Santiago during her third Parapan Am Games.

What is your biggest accomplishment to date?

My biggest accomplishment in Paracycling was winning a Bronze medal at the Rio Paralympics 2016 in the T2/T1 Female category. I was the first and am the only T1 athlete (male or female) to win a Paralympic medal.

What advice would you give to a new female rider?

Enjoy whatever type of bike riding you want to do. If you want to race or just casually ride, make sure you have a bike riding and training program you really enjoy 😊.  Successful training is just as important to racing or riding successfully.

What is next for you in your racing career?

This season has already started. I went to Australia, for the first World Cup in January and won 2 silver medals for Canada 🇨🇦.  I hope to be invited to second World Cup in Belgium, World Cup and the third World Cup in Italy, to earn points for Canada.
