Tell us about Bold Helmets how did you start the journey to inventing the helmets?

This journey all started based on a real life need. My kids are adventurous and were into biking and skateboarding from early ages and that’s when I really started to notice the struggle they faced with their helmets. One day when I was just frustrated enough, I decided I was going to do something about it. I have no experience in product development but I did a lot of research and went slow. I learned a lot along the way.

What have you learned about the cycling community?

I have learned how large the cycling community is. When I worked on these helmets, they were for my kids to ride outside with their friends. I have learned so much about how big this community really is. I also love that I see people of all ages participate in cycling!

What has been your favourite moment during this journey?

I have two. The first was when the final prototype came in and it actually fit my kids. It had been so much time and energy to get to that point so it was a beautiful moment for me. Then when we officially launched, the messages, emails and photos of kids that came in were another proud moment; parents saying we helped give their child freedom and opportunity. We helped solve a problem for other families that we were facing ourselves. Those are the two moments I hold close to my heart.

What would you share with other parents about getting their kids into cycling or sports?

I think getting your child involved in sports, no matter what sport it is, helps to build healthy life habits. Not only is it good for their physical health, it’s great for their psychological health and it creates a feeling of belonging. It’s also a positive thing to focus on outside of school. At Bold Helmets, we believe sport participation is essential for wellbeing.

What’s next for Bold Helmets?

Our goal is to keep expanding our product line. We want to create options so that kids never have to choose between who they are and what they want to do. This is just the beginning for us!
