Overview

The Ontario Cycling Association High Performance BMX structure differs from the other cycling sport disciplines.  This is a result of the younger age for BMX athlete development and the current club format which exists in Ontario.  Programming will work with a broad age-range, using camp-based touch points with aspiring younger athletes and more structured and comprehensive formats for athletes training towards international-level competition.

Provincial BMX Coach

All programming will be led by Provincial BMX Coach Brendan Arnold.  Brendan is a NCCP Performance Competition Certified Coach with over 20 years of experience.  Brendan is a former Team Canada Coach, leading the NextGen East Program as well as coaching at numerous World Cups and World Championships.

Rising Stars Camps [ages 10-14]

These one-day camps will provide an opportunity for both talent identification and skills development.  Athletes will work on race skill fundamentals and develop an understanding of basic race tactics.  Camps will build upon each other to help prepare athletes for the next step along the pathway.

Camp Fees will vary by location.

Provincial BMX High Performance Training Group [ages 15-21]

The training group program runs from mid-January to September and focuses on athletes who have demonstrated the potential for international success through performances at Canada Cups, National Championships, and ABA/US-Cup races.  These athletes will be selected to train under the guidance of the Provincial BMX Development Coach and receive access to sport science services from the Canadian Sport Institute. Those selected must commit to a minimum of one (1) training day/week during the winter and two (2) days/week during the spring/summer.

Goal

The goal of this program is to help prepare and develop athletes for success at National Championships, Canada Cups, and US National events with the objective of progressing into Team Canada projects/programs.

Location

Winter programming will take place primarily at JoyRide150 Indoor Cycling Park as well as utilize virtual platforms for education workshops elements and group-based education.  Spring/summer training will utilize various BMX tracks including the BMX Supercross track in Etobicoke.  Consideration for part-time/associate athlete involvement will be given for athletes living farther distances from training locations.

Program Includes:

  • Dedicated coaching; including annual training plan, on-going monitoring, and training group coaching with focus on SX performance
  • Facility use fees [JoyRide, Pan Am Track, etc.]
